Institut de Recerca Hospital Universitari Vall d’Hebron

IR-HUVH was founded in 1994 with the mission of developing a stable framework for basic and clinical biomedical research. The Institute is located in an independent building in the Vall d’Hebron campus and employs 397 researchers, 219 Ph.D. students and 201 technician/administrative staff. The institute is now ranking second in scientific productivity among biomedical research centres in Spain (417 publications and 2.321 total impact factor in 2008).

HUVH assembles 46 groups active in 11 areas of biomedical research, including the Digestive System Research Group (established in 1986; Head: Prof. Juan-R. Malagelada; Staff: 28 members in 2008). Scopes of the Group are patient care, medical teaching and research. Facilities include hospitalization area, endoscopy section, outpatient clinics, the specialized Unit for Inflammatory Bowel Diseases (Unitat d’Atenciò Crohn-Colitis) and the Experimental Laboratory for basic research (animal models and tissue-culture systems). The IBD Group is part of the CIBER, a Spanish National Framework for elite research in Gastroenterology-Hepatology and is founding member of the European Network for Severe Motility Disorders of the Gastrointestinal Tract (www.digestive-motility.org ).
